MEN'S BASKETBALL

Who will Notre Dame men's basketball play in ACC Tournament? Seed, time, TV finalized

WASHINGTON — Of course it had to be Georgia Tech.

One of two “permanent” repeat opponents along with Boston College since Notre Dame men’s basketball joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013-14, Georgia Tech is up first in the first game on the first day of the league tournament.

Noie:Feel good for Notre Dame men's basketball in this run, but feel good for one specific player

Notre Dame (12-19), the No. 12 seed, plays Tuesday (2 p.m., ACC Network) against No. 13 seed Georgia Tech (14-16) at Capital One Arena in downtown D.C. Both teams finished 7-13 in the ACC.

The Irish were picked in preseason to finish 15th — last place — in the league. The Yellow Jackets were picked 13th

The teams have played twice each year since 2013-14 (save for 2021 when Georgia Tech canceled a late-season trip to South Bend because of COVID-19 issues. Notre Dame leads 17-13 overall, 14-7 as conference colleagues. The Irish have won five of the last six. Two of the last four and three of six have gone to overtime.

Notre Dame and Georgia Tech have met only once in the ACC Tournament — March 12, 2019, a 78-71 Irish win in Charlotte.

Notre Dame won both meetings this season, 75-68 in overtime in early January in midtown Atlanta. That game went to overtime and is Micah Shrewsberry’s first road win as Irish head coach, thanks in part to his son, Braeden. The freshman guard came off the bench with a career-high 25 points, which earned him league rookie of the week.

That game featured nine ties and 11 lead changes.

Guard Markus Burton, who likely will be named league rookie of the year when postseason awards are announced Monday afternoon, scored 18 points with five assists and five steals as the Irish won the rematch (58-55) on Valentine’s Day in Northern Indiana. That game featured six ties and nine lead changes.

Tuesday’s winner advances to the second round to face No. 5 seed Wake Forest (19-12). The Irish beat the Demon Deacons late in the season in South Bend.

Notre Dame will play on the first day of the tournament for the second straight season and fifth time in the last seven years.
